Description

Third Bowl! If Third Bowl is open, you should probably make the trip.

One of Crested Butte's prized areas, it's only open on good snow years and is some of the last terrain to open after storms.

There are many different sub areas of Third Bowl in the unmarked / freeride terrain.

High Nowhere opens with Third Bowl and you can access that way from the Spellbound Bowl Sidestep and sometimes there is a gate from the skier's right side of East LA / Pasta Bowl.

From the top of Third Bowl you can take your first left into very steep tree chutes that open open up on the skier's left shoulder of Third Bowl called Close Call.

You can go just left into very steep tree chute, Upper Parachute, with tight turns and 5-10 foot pillows.

If you traverse right and stay on a windy, technical traverse through the trees you come under some cliffs into Mushroom Cliffs Bowl.

From Close Call you, there is a gate back into Spellbound Bowl towards Phoenix through an area called Lookout.

The second section of Third Bowl has from Close Call has access into Moosehead when open, High Exit along the skier's left rope line, and Solar Plexus through big pillows and trees.

Upper Parachute funnels into Lower Parachute, which is more of the same tight trees that then open up onto the Solar Junkyard or Main Third Bowl.

Mushroom Cliffs Bowl has options back into Lower Parachute or traversing right through the trees into Good Luck Glades and continuing along the rope line to your right to Smuggler's Knob.

The lower section of Third Bowl is accessible from a traverse across Phoenix Bowl under Moosehead that comes in under High Exit.

Low Exit has an option back into Phoenix Bowl onto Phoenix Chutes; the Solar Junkyard and Magic Carpet offer steep skiing along the rope line on your left back towards Main Third Bowl.

If you've stayed right the whole time along the rope line after Smuggler's Knob you can get into Big Tree Chute towards the bottom of Third Bowl.

There is a 5-10 minute cat track traverse back towards the East River Area that goes under the permanently closed area, Big Hourglass, and under Phoenix Bowl and Staircase back through the trees to Black Eagle and the East River Express.
