Description

Malta isn't known for its mountain biking because it's not a particularly hilly nation - the highest point in the country is less than 300 metres above sea level - and the ground is generally extremely dry and rocky.

Despite that, the country is home to some great riding for those who are more interested in scenic adventures than super technical trails. This journey, around the Maltese island of Gozo, is split into 4 stages and these will take you to many of the island's most famous and beautiful spots. Whether it's huge imposing cliffs, turquoise water and sandy beaches, or dusty and historic little villages, this ride showcases what Gozo is all about.

The route is circular so it can be started and finished anywhere. Gozo has excellent public transport so at the end of each stage you have the choice between catching the bus back to your accommodation, riding there or - best of all - staying for the night in the village you arrived in at the end of the ride. This option requires a bit more logistical planning but it means that you get to sample various different villages, and eat in some of the charming restaurants which Gozo is home to. The standard of accommodation and food varies from village to village, but you'll be able to find a decent feed and a comfy bed in all of Gozo's towns.

Whether you tackle this ride on 4 successive days or combine a few of these stages to make things tougher, this is a wonderful way of seeing this lovely little island.
