Ask any mountain enthusiast to name the 3 most famous mountains in Switzerland and you can be sure that the Eiger will be on the list. The nearby Mönch and/or Jungfrau would probably feature too. The Eiger is a peak known primarily for it's legendary north face but the mountain's summit has become one of the most sought-after in Europe, regardless of which route is used to get there.
This guidebook details how to climb the Eiger via its classic route - other than the north face that is - the Mittelegi ridge. It's a beautiful and staggeringly exposed ridge which will test your head for heights and your all round mountain skill set. Elsewhere in here you'll find the classic routes on the nearby Mönch, the legendary Jungfrau and 2 lesser known but equally deserving summits - the Schreckhorn and Wetterhorn.
Some of the peaks in here are fabled, legendary summits, others are hidden gems but all are utterly spectacular mountains, encapsulating what Swiss alpinism is all about.
If you're looking for a bit of a warmup before get started on this list, check out our 4 day glacier trek though the Bernese Oberland. It's the perfect way to get some fitness and acclimatisation in (as well as checking out how conditions are looking) before you get started on the Eiger and co!
