Description

The Great Smoky Mountains are some of the wildest mountains in all of the Appalachian Range. High summits, deep valleys, rushing rivers, dense forests, and treeless balds make up an intricate landscape that’s best explored on foot.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in the country, but that statistic is a little misleading. Most visitors simply drive through a section of the park to reach Gatlinburg or other tourist destinations, and never step off the pavement. With more than 800 miles of official trails, you can be sure that utter solitude awaits somewhere in the woods. There’s quite a range of possibilities, from easy and popular waterfall paths to grueling treks on remote ridgelines. These 10 hikes cover all of that, but they’re just a small taste of what's in the park. Find the one that’s right for you, then set out to explore the Smokies.
