It's steep, it's technical and only for those with a high level of experience in the mountains and comfortable with exposure and free climbing to the third grade. If you tick these boxes, you're going to have an incredible experience.

Description

Start from Gramartboden where you can park your car or alternatively run from the city centre. The first few kilometres of the route has a Strava segment which finishes at Höttinger Bild, for those so inclined. Then the trail climbs steep up to Achselkopf and Achselboden where there is a chance to refill your water. Look towards the alpine terrain and peak in front of you as that's where you're headed.

From Brandjochkreuz, the trail disappears as you follow the ridge and find the way via the red dots on the rocks. They are not easily seen so keep your eyes peeled and be sure of your surroundings.

The trail becomes progressively more technical with two difficult points: firstly a downclimb and then an ascent up a chimney, classified as a Grade 3 climb. Take care as the rocks can be very loose and experience is essential. There are some bolts for security and we recommend carrying a rope and harness with you.

This route, not for the faint of heart, continues to an easy Grade A Via Ferrata to Frau Hitt Saddle, where you make your descent, leaving the loose rocks behind and towards the alpine meadows surrounding Höttinger Alm, a well-earned refreshment point before the finish.
