Cassiope Peak is the southernmost summit above North Joffre Creek. Its north face offers broad open slopes with many options for long descents. This zone is generally quieter than other Duffey Lake road options.
Park in a plowed pullout on the north side of Duffey Lake road, approximately 24km east of Pemberton, BC. Begin the approach by skinning north west up the service road, crossing Joffre Creek and continuing through a flat marsh. At 1080m trend west, crossing the creek and ascending a steep sided bowl. You will have to pass below multiple avalanche paths to your north so treat this section with caution.
After passing over the paths, skin west through steep forest up to a lake at 1550m. From here continue gaining elevation, looking out for a mellow bench on climbers right, with steeper slopes above and below. Gain the bench and travel south west towards the Saxifrage-Cassiope col. Once on the ridge head south towards a sub summit at 2210m, this is where you will begin your descent. If you want to tag true summit of Cassiope Peak you can leave your skis here and complete the final boot pack up the north west ridge. Once on top you are rewarded with stunning views of Lillooet Lake to the south and the Joffre group to the east.
There are many excellent descent options from the ridge and on the slopes to the east, offering up to 700m vertical descent right down to the lake. Be aware of the cornice hazard from the ridge around Cassiope Peak summit, as well as the many convex rolls on the slopes below.
Head back to the car by reversing your approach route. Be careful crossing back over the avalanche paths below the lake, especially in spring, when the afternoon sun can heavily affect these south facing features.
