Manda II East Couloir Attempt Map

After establishing that we were unable to climb the icefall on the main Bhrigupanth Glacier, Plan B was to climb the East Couloir of Manda II.

Description

We made two separate attempts from an ABC located on the main glacier (approximately 1/2 day walk up glacier from BC). Both started very late at night to take advantage of possible refreeze but stopped at ~3/4 height in the couloir due to warm conditions (postholing) and rockfall.

Difficulty

Easy

The ascent involves simple glacier hiking and/or short, straightforward rock scrambles. Equivalent to Alpine F, F+

High Exposure

3 out of 4

Much of the route is difficult to protect and a fall could be disastrous at certain points.

Remoteness

4 out of 4

In the high mountains or remote conditions, all individuals must be completely autonomous in every situation.

Best time to visit

in March, April, October and November

Equipment required

  • Crampons
  • Glacier kit
  • 2 Ice Axes
