Tongariro Alpine Crossing Map

The Tongariro Crossing on New Zealand's North Island is justifiably renowned as one of the world's best one-day hikes. The trail weaves through a diverse landscape of volcanic terrain, including craters, lava flows, and active geothermal areas. Along the way, you'll pass by several iconic landmarks, including the emerald-colored waters of the Blue Lake and the towering Mount Ngauruhoe, also known as "Mount Doom" from the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

Description

Usually tackled as a one-way route, the trail is a relatively challenging 19.7km / 12 miles. The hike usually takes around 6 to 8 hours to complete, depending on your fitness level and how long you stop to rest or take in the scenery. The hike can be done in either direction, but most people choose to start at the Mangatepopo end and finish at the Ketetahi end. Whichever direction you choose, make sure you arrange transportation in advance.

The Tongariro Crossing is considered one of the best one-day hikes in the world and is a must-do for any outdoor enthusiast visiting the North Island. However, it's important to be prepared for the hike, as the weather can be unpredictable and the terrain can be challenging at times.

It's a good idea to bring plenty of water, snacks, and warm, waterproof clothing, as well as downloading the map of the area in case of poor visibility (and cell reception can be 'spotty'). It's also a good idea to let someone know your plans, as the hike is in a remote location.
