Skåla Map

This is Norway's longest continuous uphill measured in amount of vertical meters, and the reward at the summit is absolutely worth it!

Description

From the parking lot at Tjugen, follow the sign towards Skåla, initially on the road, then the trail begins. There are grazing animals along the way and you have to pass some fences - remember to close them behind you. The trail is marked with red Ts the whole way and route finding is easy.

The trail goes into Fosdalen and crosses the river at 650 m.a.s.l. The gradient is even the whole way. Pass Skålavatnet at 1141 m.a.s.l. and turn left at 1400 m.a.s.l. Depending on the conditions there might be snow in the hill you are now facing. Consider to bring a lightweight sledge or plastic bag to make the descent more fun and efficient.

At 1700 m.a.s.l. the trail turns right and you reach the top ridge where the famous stairs begin. You are now in the final section before the summit.

At the summit you will find the iconic Skålatårnet and a mind blowing view. Alongside Skålatårnet, there is a new cabin at the summit named Skålabu. Skålabu offers accommodation by self-service and is hosted by DNT (Norwegian trekking association). For more information regarding booking visit: https://ut.no/hytte/101254/skalabu

Return follows the same trail as the ascent. On hot summer days a cool bath in the fjord from the dock in Loen is highly recommended!

Even though weather is warm down at Tjugen, the conditions can be tougher in the high mountains and on the summit. Remember to bring extra clothes.
