Buckeye / Towpath Loop Map

Second to the Buckeye/Bridle Loop, this is one of the top trail runs beginning at the Boston Trailhead and Visitor Center. This route explores the picturesque forest and quiet streams on the iconic Buckeye Trail, then returns on the Towpath Trail - a flat, mixed-surface pathway.

Description

Run clockwise, you will pass Blue Hen Falls early into the run, plus a spur trail leads to Buttermilk Falls if you're looking for a relaxing swimming hole. Near the end of the run, you'll pass the historic Stanford House. Built by George Stanford, the house "enjoys a commanding view of the Cuyahoga River and the adjacent Ohio & Erie Canal," according to the NPS. George's father James "settled the property in 1806 and served in several township offices. He was also a member of the original surveyors of Boston Township before deciding to move his family to the area."

Much of this route is on the Buckeye Trail, which according to Wikipedia, is a 1,400+ mile "long-distance trail that loops around the state of Ohio. Part of it is on roads, and part is on wooded trail." It's described as an "outdoor as well as a history experience," passing through countless small towns and other popular sites, including state parks, national forests, and of course—Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Visit this link to view the section of trail as it passes through the region.

While many loops in the National Park are difficult to navigate due to countless intersecting trails, this route is very straightforward. Beginning at the Boston Trailhead, follow the Buckeye Trail across the river, then stay on it until Snowville Road. There, you'll keep right and make your way to the Red Lock Trailhead for the Towpath Trail. Heading south, you'll wander along the banks of the river, offering you plenty of riverside views and possibly wildlife. You'll pass the historic Stanford House near the end of your run.
