Tyler State Park: Loops A - D Map

Opened in 1939 after improvements from the Civilian Conservation Corps, Tyler State Park is one of the top destinations to trail run within a day trip of Dallas. Just shy of 1,000 acres, the park includes over 16 miles of pristine singletrack open to foot traffic, with this loop touring about half of it. This run explores loops A through D, all of which are multi-use and open to mountain biking, yet serve as an excellent opportunity to enjoy a longer run within the park. These loops were also part of the former Whispering Pines Trail Run, an ultramarathon that was held annually through 2016.

Description

Situated in the piney woods of East Texas, the trail offers a hefty dose of roots and rock yet is often blanketed with a soft layer of pine needles. Sightings of deer, squirrels, raccoons, and opossums are quite common, and birding is another popular reason to visit. Stacked Loops make it easy to shorten or lengthen a run to your choosing, and the park's distance from Dallas makes it a great opportunity to find some solitude on the trail, even on a busy holiday weekend.

In addition to the trails, Tyler SP offers restrooms, showers, picnic sites, amphitheater, grocery store, and several types of campsites. A 64-acre lake sits at the center of the park, and while motors are allowed, there is a 5mph speed limit for anyone using the lake. Common fish species include crappie, perch, bass, and catfish, and a public swimming area near the campground is a popular attraction for those staying in the campground.
