Goblin Valley State Park: Wild Horse Mountain Bike Trails Map

While Goblin Valley State Park is best known for its stunning Valley of the Goblins area, in 2015, the park opened a dedicated mountain bike trail system called the "Wild Horse Trail System." However, the trails are better known simply by the state park's name.

Description

The Wild Horse trails provide scenic beginner-friendly singletrack that winds through a lunar landscape entirely bereft of vegetation high on a mesa. Riders will roll through sandy washes and along hard-packed dirt hillsides. Nearby, towering mountains rise into the sky, providing beautiful vistas throughout the entire ride.

The Desert View and Dark Side of the Moon trails are easily the ride's highlights. These trails lead to sweeping vistas off the edge of the elevated mesa. As you approach the edge, you'll realize just how high you are above the desert floor as the cliffside drops hundreds of feet almost straight down. Be sure to spend some time soaking in the incredible views of the San Rafael Swell—this scenery is truly spectacular!

The state park's decision to build dedicated mountain bike trails and cater to an entirely different audience is a laudable effort. While the nod to mountain bikers as a valid user group is much appreciated, the area where these trails have been built isn't ideal for sustainable mountain bike trails. These trails are prone to eroding whenever the area receives rain. At the time of this writing in 2022, it's very common to come whipping around a corner and almost plunge into a washout where a trench has eroded straight through the trail. Some of these trenches are only a few inches deep, while others are up to two feet deep. It appears that the park needs to do some serious trail maintenance, but the trails don't seem to have been worked on recently.

Most of these trails, unfortunately, are also very lacking in flow. There are many of awkward corners and unnecessary up-and-down bits that jam up the flow. While there's nothing technically challenging in this trail system, there's a big difference between a superbly-built beginner trail that even advanced riders will enjoy for the flow and a kinda awkward beginner trail that's just sort of "there." This trail system is, unfortunately, the latter.

Don't let that dissuade you from checking out these trails if you're in the area. Just remember that the true draw to the Wild Horse trails is the views from the seat of your bike—not the quality of the trails.
