Trail Running Difficult
One of the most renowned mountain bike trails in the world, Slickrock offers an incredibly unique and otherworldly trail running experience just outside of Moab. Contrary to the name, the sandstone formations offer incredibly good traction when dry, while the lack of vegetation gives way to lush views of the La Sal Mountains and Colorado River.
According to adventurer Greg Heil, Slickrock is "one of the first world-famous mountain bike trails" since the sport's early years in the 70s and 80s. First popular among motorcycle riders and 4x4 vehicles, the area quickly earned its reputation among cyclists, hikers, and runners as it helped define Moab a top outdoor destination out west.
Open year-round, spring and fall offer the most favorable weather while the intense summer heat can become unbearable. Pack plenty of water and get an early start to your day no matter the time of year. Even during the winter months, the exposure will drain your energy far quicker than you expect.
The run is split into two portions, the main loop and a shorter "practice" loop near the trailhead. Test your fitness on the practice loop and ensure you have enough water before departing on the full loop. Though total elevation change is somewhat minimal, the trail is quite steep at times and certain sections may require three points of contact.
The entire trail is blazed with white markers painted directly on the sandstone. Several side trails lead to vistas and while venturing off the loop is commonplace with most visitors, be extremely mindful of the dangerous cliffs and bluffs that lie just off the trail.
