Traversing pine-coned forests isn't only available to the best off-piste skiers; snowshoeing takes you away from the crowds, off the beaten path, and through winter wonderlands. This peaceful way of enjoying wintertime in the mountains also has a very low environmental impact compared to other winter sports, leaving only the trace of your footprint on fresh snow. It's more strenuous than hiking, but like hiking, the slower, meditative pace with which you move allows time to spot wildlife, contemplate, and take it all in.
The French ski town Chamonix is a dream for snowshoers. A short walk from the centre brings you to emerald forests draped in snow, waterfalls, mountain lakes and of course majestic alpine views. Here is an extensive collection of snowshoeing adventures in and around Chamonix. For a pleasant high altitude loop through alpine meadows with views of the Aravis, Fiz and Mont Blanc ranges, try the Plateau du Prarion adventure.

A snow-sure trail at 1850 meters elevation with spectacular panoramic views
Technical snowshoeing route that offers a panoramic view of Chamonix.
In order to discourage people skinning up the Pierre Ric piste, the local commune has initiated this sane alternative to reach the Lognan ski station, in a similar way to the one up to the Prarion at Les Houches. Justifiably popular with uphill enthusiasts, it provides a bad weather option, or a short, training route with easy access and a fast, safe descent.
