Vienna essentially marks the end of the Alps because it's the first major city reached after those famous mountains give way to gentle hills and rolling plains. As such, the Austrian capital isn't really considered an Alpine city but there are a surprising amount of outdoor adventures close to it, from bike rides to snowshoe routes and cross country ski tracks.
Winter is fairly brief in the Wiener Hausberge, also known as the Viennese Alps, but while it's there we strongly recommend that you check out these trips. Vienna is one of the greatest and most beautiful cities on Earth but everybody needs some cold, fresh air on their face from time to time and this guidebook is for those days.

The cross-country skiing centre Turmkogel is situated at approx. 1.000m - 1.250m above sea level in the area of the municipality Puchenstuben and offers approx. 30km cross-country skiing trails in "classic style", approx. 11km skating trails and snowshoe hiking trails.

The cross-country skiing centre Turmkogel is situated at approx. 1.000m - 1.250m above sea level in the area of the municipality of Puchenstuben and offers approx. 30km of cross-country skiing trails in "classic style". At the central cross-country ski trail entrance "Turmkogel" there is the small natural snow family ski area "Turmkogel" with two ski lifts, a baby lift and a children's area. From season 2011 we offer additional 11km skating trails and snowshoe hiking trails.
With a picturesque view of the Ötscher, both beginners and experienced cross-country skiers will be accompanied on the Lassingtal-Joachimsberg cross-country ski trail.
