Description

With Gross Glockener, Zell am See, Salzburg and Schladming all close by, the small but incredibly scenic Austrian region of Pongau can easily be overlooked. Those who opt to visit this peaceful little area will be rewarded with solitude, friendly people and beautiful views across rolling hills and over towards the mythical Wilder Kaiser peaks too.

The 3 hikes described here are suitable for those new to hiking, and to families. None of them are long, none of them feature any technical terrain and all are perfect for introducing your kids to the joys of moving through the hills. For hikers without kids, these trips are still more than worthwhile and will take you to some of the most peaceful parts of the entire Alpine chain.

Austria is not short of big, high and serious mountains but regions like this are equally deserving of attention (albeit for different reasons) and are the ideal venues for family fun. The hikes all begin close to the village of Goldegg, which makes for a great base for a few quiet days - it has a couple of nice cafes, a wonderful lake and....not much else!

So if you're in search of solitude, rolling hills, big views and something a bit different from the Austrian norm, get to Goldegg and enjoy the slow life for a few days!
