Zell am See is an absolutely beautiful lakeside mountain town in Salzburg. It is especially geared up for hiking as it has a diverse topography and vast area to roam, making each of your hiking adventures very different from the last. There is an amazing spectrum of routes, from family-friendly strolls to day-long high alpine hikes, with many of the trails being designated for hikers only.
There are three key areas to explore by foot when you visit Zell am See. One is the Schmittenhöhe, nicknamed the "hiker’s mountain," which is lift-accessed from Zell am See. The second is the impressive Kitzsteinhorn, which you can reach by lift from the sister town of Kaprun. The third is the quaint village of Thumersbach, located on the eastern shore of Lake Zell. In this guidebook, you will find a selection of the best hikes from all three areas.
The Zell am See Kaprun tourist board also offers a guest card for visitors. This card grants visitors free public transport around the whole area, making it even more enticing to venture further out of the Zell am See center to explore all the amazing hiking options!
