Description

Summit County, Colorado reigns as one of the most famous winter playgrounds in the world. The ultra-popular ski resorts of Breckenridge and Keystone attract tourists from literally around the globe to their endless slopes. But with the crowds of tourists come lift lines so horrible that most locals simply refuse to ski on weekends or holidays.

One of several potential solutions is to skip the lift lines altogether by grabbing your fat bike and hitting the trails! Along with alpine skiing and snowboarding, Breckenridge is a superb destination for all other types of winter sports such as fat biking, cross country skiing, and snowboarding. In this guidebook, we’ve rounded up four of the best fat biking hits close to Breckenridge.

Unfortunately, the fat biking access is more limited in Breckenridge than it needs to be. A strange decision by the White River National Forest has effectively banned fat bikes from almost all singletrack trails in the forest—even trails that are open to bikes in the summer. This isn’t a typical decision, and it very well could change in the near future. But at the time of this writing, current winter trails such as the Peaks Trail are technically off-limits to fat bikes.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t any great rides to be had! Two of the best snow rides in the area include Boreas Pass (a dirt road in the summer, so bikes are allowed in the winter) and the B&B Mine Loop, which isn’t on national forest land. Sally Barber Road and the Recpath both offer excellent beginner-friendly fat biking, so you can even get out for a pedal without the challenge of tight trails or steep climbs. Whichever ride you choose, you’re guaranteed to enjoy your immersion in the winter beauty of Summit County!
