Description

In a strong field, the Cabane de Moiry might just be the best hut in Switzerland for passing a lazy afternoon.

It is beautifully situated and in 2008 the hut owners made the most of its location by adding a huge, glass-fronted extension to the hut.

The hut dining room now sits in front of these windows and enjoys perhaps the finest view from any eatery in the country. The hike up to the hut begins at a huge parking area south of Lac de Moiry, and immediately north of the smaller (but more brightly-coloured) Lac de Châteaupré.

Walk south out of the parking area and pass above the north shore of Lac de Châteaupré to reach a clear path which climbs gently south-east towards the moraine descending from the Glacier de Moiry. The path traverses a ridge above the moraine and then drifts away from the moraine and begins zig-zagging up to the hut.

The views from the hut - and the trip up to it - are fantastic, and although the peaks above the hut don't reach the hallowed 4000 metres, they are rocky and spectacular nonetheless. Check in and enjoy the opportunity of sitting and staring at the view out of the dining room window.

There are a number of fun, low-grade alpine climbing adventures to be had from the Cabane de Moiry so it's highly recommended to stay for a few nights rather than nipping in for a single route.

No matter how many nights you stay, you won't get bored of the view!
