The mythical Trollfjord area provides a truly magical ski experience and is home to some of Lofoten’s best adventure skiing.

Accessible only by boat, it is also a more remote and committing place to ski than some of the other classic tours in Lofoten.

However, the reward is well worth the effort to get there.

Above the Trollfjordvatnet Lake, Trolltinden and its neighbouring peaks loom majestically above the frozen lake and offer some of the very best north facing ski terrain in all of Lofoten.

The north facing bowls and couloirs coming down from a saddle close to the summit of Trolltinden make for perhaps the best and most straightforward ski tour on the north side of the lake.

The classic route as shown here should be straightforward to skin up and and ski down, with sections sustained at 30-35 degrees and a couple very short slopes of 40 degrees.

There are, however, a couple steeper variations which can be taken in the right conditions (line showed in the topo photo).

These steeper lines can be skied onsight via a loop after skinning up the normal route.

It is essential to be sure of snow stability and quality (can be icy) before dropping into these.

Starting from the dock, head up trending eastward and navigate the bushy riverbed as best as possible that leads to Trollfjordvatnet.

The lake should be well frozen for the majority of the season but take care late season, checking that it is safe to cross.

With the right snow conditons, it should be possible to skin the entire way up the line.

The bottom section is the steepest and is sustained at around 35 degrees so it is necessary to have a high degree of confidence in the snow stability before starting up.

The line tops out at a spectacular saddle at around 950 meters elevation.
