Boxcar gets its name from the size and shape of the cornice that forms above these chutes.
The ski patrol keeps the cornice trimmed back with explosives, but the entrance is often vertical.
Watch out for chunks of avalanche debris and old cornice strewn below.
For those wanting to avoid the vertical entrance, skirt the large cornice on either side.
The skier's left (northern) side of the large cornice offers a wide shallow couloir free of rocks, cliffs and other obstacles.
This popular chute is wide enough for advanced intermediates wanting to ski Silver Basin.
Located just below The Beach, a large flat bench along the ridge separating Silver Basin and Crystal Lakes Basin, this is one of the easiest runs in Silver Basin.
