Description

The hike starts at Passo della Cantoniera (Carpegna).

It follows the trail CAI 118 in the beechwoods and then turns left on the CAI 17 after having crossed the road.

The Sasso Simoncello can be climbed with a small detour on the left-hand side (no special equipment needed, but beware of exposure and help yourself with the fixed ropes).

The tour then continues on the back of the "Sassi" in Tuscany (the Sasso Simoncello divides Emilia-Romagna, Marche and Tuscany regions), with amazing views over Alpe della Luna, Monte Nerone and Monte Catria.

Follow the trail 17 to Sasso Simone.

The easy path leads to the top of the Sasso, where the Città del Sole was built by the Medici dynasty in 1554 (it lasted only 10 years due to the prohibitive conditions the inhabitants were exposed to, wind and snowstorms were pretty frequent during winter months on this exposed plateau - IT: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sasso_di_Simone).

The steel cross on top was knocked over in winter 2017/2018 by a strong snowstorm.

Once descended from the Sasso, follow the trail 19bis back to the trail 17, then 118 back to the Passo Cantorniera.

Hike not advised after rains because of heavy mud.
