Description

The Rifugio Chabod is set right in the heart of the Gran Paradiso national park.

In the past the park was a personal hunting ground for King Vittorio Emmanuel II but it is now there for everyone to enjoy and to protect the wildlife.

Amongst the animals that roam the park are chamois, ibex, foxes and the elusive wolf.

This hut can be very busy but it is exceptionally friendly, the food is excellent and it has retained a lot of its charm.

The opening date at the beginning of the ski touring season can vary and it is essential to make a reservation in advance.

In spring the hut is almost always used as a starting point for Gran Paradiso and the kit listed is assuming this. From the parking, cross the bridge and head into the forest on the summer path (later in the season you will likely need to strap your skis to your pack and walk this section if there is insufficient snow).

Continue up to Lavassey which is a great place to have a break on the ascent to the hut.

From there continue skinning up until you start to clear the trees and emerge into open terrain.

Follow the easiest angled line ahead until a short steepening will put you in sight of the hut and the final short climb. Titti the guardian will give you the warmest of welcomes and is a good source of information for current conditions on the Gran Paradiso.

Enjoy a drink and have a look at the spectacular Grand Paradiso North Face using the in-situ binoculars outside the hut!
