Description

One of the best views of Lake Louise is atop The Big Beehive, where you can gaze upon the turquoise water from high above.

Sometimes called the Beehive for short (though there is another rock called Little Beehive), this formation is the buttress that’s reflected in Mirror Lake, and it’s said to resemble a giant beehive.

To get there, hike past Mirror Lake, up to Agnes Lake and the teahouse. Take rest there if you wish, then continue along the lakeshore on a trail that’s a bit rockier than what you took to get there.

It’s relatively flat at first, but after rounding the lake, you’ll zigzag upward through the trees.

This part is quite steep but not very long.

At the top, you’ll be on the rounded ridgeline that forms the Beehive, and an easy path leads the remainder of the way to the stunning overlook. There is one small shade structure there, but it’s no place to be in bad weather.

Descend quickly if you feel like a storm is coming on, and don’t go at all if the forecast looks ugly.

The major reward is the view, anyhow, so it’s not worth risking on a stormy day.

Also note that the trail around Lake Agnes crosses some north-facing slopes where snow lingers well into June.

Be prepared with traction devices if you expect icy conditions. Sources: https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/pn-np/ab/banff/activ/randonee-hiking/lakelouise https://www.wmsll.com/lake-louise-trails/hiking-trail-guide.php
