Description

While most trekkers go due south out of Imlil (heading directly for the Toubkal refuges) this route takes you immediately away from the crowds and into the wilds of the Atlas mountains.

Begin by hiking west-southwest through peaceful green forests on a low angled path.

This initial section of the hike leads you through a series of farms and you may well see people at work in the fields.

Be aware (today and throughout your trip to Morocco) that the local people (particularly women) are unlikely to want to be photographed or disturbed, so be sensitive and only take pictures if you've asked permission from your subject. Eventually green forests and fields give way to scree and rock and you really have the sensation of leaving the valley behind and entering the mountains.

Climb steadily up to the Tizi Mzik col, which is wide and wild.

It enjoys massive views to the east and west and there is plenty of space for you to sit down and take it all in. From the col make a long traverse and then an enjoyable descent down to Tizi Oussem village.

Imlil feels somewhat westernised by the flow of trekkers passing through it, but Tizi Oussem feels like "real" Morocco and don't be surprised if you are stared at by the locals - they don't have many outsiders passing through here and you are likely to be something of a novelty.

There are some gites to stay in but they are very simple so don't expect any luxuries.

Spend the evening wandering the village and enjoying the serenity.
