Description

Start by driving up (via a toll road which costs €5) from the village of Gnadenwald up to the Hinterhornalm, a mountain restaurant with a fabulous view of the Inn valley and Innsbruck city.

Grab a coffee and sit and stare at the view for a while before commencing your walk; the hut is too well positioned to just park up there and immediately start hiking! Head east on a large and usually busy jeep track, heading for the ever popular Walderalm hut.

The walk around to the hut takes about half an hour is largely flat with just a brief climb towards the end.

Grab a second coffee and admire the second stunning view of the day, this time of the wild and somewhat intimidating Karwendel peaks which lie to the north of the hut, before retracing your steps back towards the Hinterhornalm for 100 metres, at which point a path branches off left. Follow the path leftwards as it climbs into forests and then begins to flatten out.

The path can be quite indistinct at times but there are usually enough signs of previous hikers that you should be able to find the route.

Failing that, just follow the line on FATMAP! The path begins to descend and, just when you’re beginning to think that you’ve got lost, it begins to become more distinct again.

The further you descend the clearer the path gets until eventually it becomes a large jeep track.

Follow it down for what feels like a long way as it zig zags down to meet another jeep track.

Turn left on the new jeep track and follow it through a steep sided and dramatic valley to the Ganalm, which is perched in an incredible position high above the valley floor.

Enjoy the high mountain ambience of the hut and then make the tough-feeling climb north-west back up to the Walderalm.

Grab a final drink and then swing back around to the Hinterhornalm.
