Recommended season: from April to OctoberThe starting point of our Strudengaurunde is the Gießenbachmühle mill at the entrance to the Stillensteinklamm gorge, at the western end of the municipality of St.Nikola~Donau.
From here you have a wonderful view of the legendary island Wörth at the former Donaustrudel and the castle Werfenstein.
1 km below the castle Werfenstein we turn left into the district Struden, past the imperial toll house, the former ship's church of Struden to the municipal office St.
Nikola (parking possibility, further starting point).
Before we drive again on the federal road is left the Haussteinkapelle over which in the rocks an inscription is hewn, which informs about the blasting of the Haussteins (Donauwirbel) and the regulation of the Strudens.
In the district St.
Nikola we pass the old Schiffsmeisterhaus (Hotel zur Post/Danzer) and finally cross the Dimbach.2 km high on a rock stands the parish church St.
Passing the elementary school, we continue our journey towards Sarmingstein.4 km In the district of Sarmingstein we pass the Filialkirche and the Schiffsmeisterhaus.
Above the ship master's house we see the round tower, which used to be the northern corner point of the "Bastei".
After the Gasthof Ettlinger we continue through the Hirschenau district across the border from Lower Austria to Isperdorf.13 km The route continues through the village of Weins to the Ybbs-Persenbeug show power station.17 km At the power station we cross the Danube and then turn right along the right bank of the Danube towards Willersbach.25 km We leave the municipal road, which leads to the left to the Freyenstein ruins towards Neustadtl and cycle along the Danube cycle path towards Hößgang.
On this stretch we enjoy a magnificent view of the municipality of St.
Nikola and the districts passed through at the beginning of the round.30 km In Hößgang three ponds invite you to take a short rest and a refreshing swim.
Or you can enjoy the view of the Struden district with the toll house, Werfenstein Castle and the island of Wörth.33 km In Wiesen you have the opportunity to shorten the Strudengaurunde and take the ferry directly to Grein.35 km At the Danube bridge in Grein we leave Lower Austria and cross the Danube in the direction of Grein.37 km Before the end of the Strudengaurunde, the romantic little Danube town of Grein with its historical sights invites you to linger.42 km At the end of the Strudengaurunde, we leave the main road and drive through the Gießenbach viaduct (Eisenban bridge), built between 1900 and 1908, to the Gießenbachmühle, where you can have a snack at the Gießenbachmühle snack station.
