This stage of the Fuschlsee, Wolfgangsee and Mondsee long-distance hiking trails starts at the Fürberg landing stage.
From there we walk up towards the village of Winkl, where we pass the Europakloster Gut Aich.
Along the edge of the forest we then reach Hüttenstein Castle and Lake Krottensee, one of the 76 lakes in the Salzkammergut.
We cross the main road at Gasthof Batzenhäusl (last stop for about 3 hours) and hike through a meadowy valley called Zeppezau.
At the end of the valley the ascent to the Obenauer Alm (not farmed) begins.
At about the highest point of the alp, to the right of the hiking trail, there is a spring that rises under a tree.
We follow the path and now have the steepest, but shortest part of today's hike ahead of us.
The crisp climb leads us through the forest to a crossroads in the middle of the forest.
We turn to the left, steadily slightly ascending on a forest path in the direction of Almkogel.
After about 500m the forest path turns into a rocky hiking trail.
Soon we reach an exposed spot, which offers a fantastic view over the Mondsee to Attersee.
Now it is only a few meters to the intermediate destination, the Almkogel, also the highest point of today's hike.
We enjoy the view over Mondsee up to Irrsee and the Salzburger Voralpenland before we start our descent.
The descent from the Almkogel leads down a hiking trail in continuous serpentines until we reach the Klausbach.
We cross it and stop briefly at the Thekla Chapel.
After a few hundred meters we have now reached the Gasthof Drachenwand, where we deserve some refreshment.
The trail now leads along less frequented freight roads or on marked footpaths and cycle paths through the village of Schwarzindien am Mondsee, then along the lake shore to our stage destination in the village of Mondsee.
