The Backenstein (1772 m) is the local mountain of Grundlsee and bears its name because of its distinctive shape from the view from the village of Grundlsee. The summit cross is a little lower than the highest point because of the visibility from the valley and the view. The time needed for the detour from the way to the Appelhaus to the summit is about 1 hour. The Albert Appelhaus is a very comfortably equipped refuge and starting point for many alpine tours in the Totes Gebirge.
