Marterl" in the Carinthian dialect is actually a way cross.
But because today's pilgrimage church was built at the beginning of the 20th century instead of such a cross, its name remained "Marterle" - it is the highest pilgrimage church in Austria! Whether for religious motives or pure joy in hiking in great surroundings: the walker of this stage can expect a varied route along the river, through villages, on forest paths and finally on wonderful, skilfully laid out climbs.
The view is correspondingly varied: a look back at the Glocknergruppe, the rugged 3000m peaks of the Schobergruppe, the Lienzer Dolomites and finally the lonely Kreuzeck group opposite.
