Description

The climatic health resort of Windischgarsten (602 m) lies in the middle of a wide, mountain-fringed valley basin, which is one of the most beautiful basin landscapes in the northern Alpine region.

The town is the tourist and economic centre of the Pyhrn-Priel region.

Windischgarsten is home to many sporting facilities such as a golf course, mountain bike routes, 2 tennis courts plus tennis hall, riding club, climbing hall in the AV home, etc.

Well-managed hotels and inns invite you to linger.

The famous arcade courtyard in the former Lechnerhaus and the Psalmenweg in the church park are special gems.

From the Windischgarsten market square we walk a short distance eastwards to the Rosenau fork at the Hengstpass or Spital am Pyhrn (Hödl hairdressing salon).

At the signpost "Proviantweg" we follow the Pfarrgasse upwards, past Pfarrheim to another fork in the road.

The gravel path leads us on the edge of the slope above the Heimathaus (museum) and the open-air swimming pool into the landscape park (geological nature trail or geological features of this region from Oberschulrat Stanzel).

Now we take the well laid out hiking trail near the brook in the valley (million way = one walks through millions of years of earth history) to the sawmill Pistlmühle.

Here it goes through the company premises upstream to the Gasthaus Schaffelmühle.

We now walk right (Güterweg Bischofsberg) up the dust-free road, past Café Sophie to the fork in the road (on the right there would be the Hotel Sperlhof).

After we have used the left road branch, we walk the dust-free goods road east to the homestead Hansl am Graben.

Through the farm we march south uphill to the signpost and left downhill into the watery valley floor of the Fraitgraben.

Here we take the forest road near the brook into the valley to the Ramitscheder mill.

Further upstream we reach the house Stanglmühle (former Lodenstampfe) and the road up to the Dansbacher chapel.

We follow the dust-free road up to the settlement area (fork in the road after Spital am Pyhrn to the Gasthof Schrofler or Landhotel Oberwengerhof).

Here we turn left eastwards to the next road junction and turn right uphill to the Singerskogel snack station.

The road now leads us a little uphill, then to the right (parking lot) on path no.

616.

Partly on the alpine pasture path, partly on the road, crossing several forest paths, we finally hike steeper up to the Gowilalm hut with a magnificent view of the wide valley area of the Garstner valley and the surrounding mountain world.
