Description

Hiking suggestion: From the stop "Obertraun Koppenbrüllerhöhle" (or station "Obertraun Dachsteinhöhlen") we take the train to Bad Aussee.

From there we walk on a forest road along the Traun and the railway for about 1.8 km up to the so-called "Austeg", where, crossing the Traun, we approach the village of Sarstein on a slightly ascending path.

After a short stretch through this romantic district of Aussee we come to a beautifully laid out forest road, on which we reach a hut, the so-called "Vogelhütte" (with shelter), partly with a beautiful view of the Krippenstein.

In front of this hut we turn left and approach the Traun again on a descending path, which we cross on a beautiful, newly built (and in Graz specially awarded) suspension bridge.

(After 300m another snack station).

The section of the path (3.5 km) in front of us is actually the wildly romantic most beautiful part of this new hiking trail, which has always been laid out along the old railway line next to the raging Traun, which was completely washed away by the high water in 1897 and then moved much higher.

Through the old railway tunnel, which was the only object to defy these masses of water, we reach the Koppenbrüller Cave, situated on the wildly roaring water.

The Koppenbrüller Cave is a water-bearing stalactite cave which is open from the end of April to the end of September.

(Guided tours daily from 10:00 a.m.

to 4:00 p.m.) Now it is only a 10 minute walk to the end of the Koppental hiking trail.

Here you can continue your hike for about 30 minutes (there and back) to the idyllic Koppenwinklsee and the Koppenwinklalm.

However, our actual route leads us back to Obertraun via the Obertrauner Höhenweg (another 3.5 km) to our starting point at the station "Obertraun-Dachsteinhöhlen".

If you would like to extend this leisurely half-day tour to a day tour, you can continue on the well-known Hallstättersee - Ostuferwanderweg along the Hallstättersee to Steeg at the Hallstättersee for another 10 km.
