Description

The starting point is the free car park for via ferrata climbers near the Gasthof Drachenwand.

We turn right immediately after the inn towards Drachenwand and Almkogel on a short steep forest path.

After approx.

200m you reach the turnoff towards Schober and Ruine Wartenfels, follow it and continue on a comfortable forest path.

Passing a beautiful Materl and some streams, the hike leads into a forest road.

Turn left there and immediately right again, following the signs for Schober.

After a gentle uphill stretch, the hiking trail branches off to the left in the direction of Schober.

This path leads us through a water and spring protection area, the overflow where the fresh spring water shoots out can already be heard from a distance.

Follow the hiking trail until you reach a beat with a great view of Mondsee.

There the hiking trail leads into another forest road.

But now no longer follow the signs to Schober, but turn left and follow the forest road gently downhill until you reach the turnoff to the original hiking trail.

From here the same way back to the starting point.

The best time for the hike is in the morning, from about 15:00 the sun goes down behind the dragon wall and the Schober and the whole trail is in the shade.

What's to see? Especially now in spring the forest is blue (liverwort), white (wood anemone and butterbur) and yellow (primrose and coltsfoot).

Rare plants include the peculiar deer tongue fern, the marsh marigold and the forest lycopod from dinosaur times.

Beside the usual forest-birds, the peregrine falcon brooding in the dragon-wall can be seen with luck, or at least be heard.

In spring the squirrels are very active and the first butterflies (lemon butterfly and fox) are already on their way.
