Description

You have not experienced Solitude Mountain Resort until you have hiked Fantasy Ridge.

This chute allows you to see the exit from the top.

However, if you are afraid of heights, do not attempt this hike.

You have to take your skis off and strap them to your backpack so you can use both hands to climb.

Also, I would recommend being use to climbing for this boot-pack because there are places where you need to hold onto a metal cable to keep your balance and walk up.

Take the Summit Chair Lift to the top and exit to the left.

You will see an Avalanche Beacon check station and gate to enter "Fantasy Ridge." Before you go through this gate make sure you have a partner, beacon, shovel, probe and knowledge of how to rescue your partner from an avalanche.

Even though this is considered in-bounds terrain at Solitude you are still entering the backcountry and it will take Ski Patrol up to 15-20 minutes to rescue you or your friend at the earliest.

Strap your skis to your back so you can use your hands as you hike up.

First, you walk up a simple boot-back and then it will flatten out so you can see the whole Honeycomb Canyon and into Wolverine Cirque to your left.

Next, you will start climbing on large rocks, as you climb up the rocks you will notice a metal cable attached to the rocks that you can hold onto help pull yourself up.

The first part of this rock climb is the scariest and most climbing intensive.

Once you get passed the cable it will start to turn into a snow boot-pack again and you will feel like you are walking up an exposed ridge line.

Soon you will reach the top and it will flatten out.

When you are on top of the peak you will be able to see all the way into Little Cottonwood Canyon where Alta and Snowbird Resorts are.

This side is called Grizzly Gulch.

Put on your skis or snowboard and start traversing on the backside around the peak until you reach the entrance of the chute.

Once on top of the chute you will be able to see the run all the way into Honeycomb Canyon.

Make sure you are on top of the right chute, look at the photo for reference.

Take a breath and enjoy! You will drop back into Honeycomb Canyon where you can choose to ski straight down to Honeycomb Return or find more pockets of snow.
