Description

7,779-foot Tumalo Mountain isn’t in and of itself a significant climb, but the 360-degree views of volcanic peaks and rolling tree-covered mountain ridges are well-worth the effort! Begin the hike from the trailhead on the Cascade Lakes Highway—don’t forget your Northwest Forest Pass.

The trail climbs quickly through the trees, switchbacking up the mountainside.

While the climb is somewhat steep and a little eroded in places, the hike is very straightforward. The trees begin to thin before you know it, providing stunning views of Mount Bachelor just across the highway.

With such a gorgeous volcano filling your entire field of vision, the miles tick by quickly while you’re absorbed in the view.

Soon, you’ll be at the top of the small mountain, enjoying panoramic views of the entire region. The trail traverses the top of the mountain ridge to the north, and at the end of the ridge, a stunning panorama of the Three Sisters and Broken Top opens up before you.

Be sure to stop, grab a snack and a drink, and savor this unbelievable view.

It’s rare to reach such an incredible vista with such a short hike! Once you’ve had your fill of the view, retrace your steps back to your car.
