Description

Leave the comfort of the St Bernard Monastery and ski down the road to the road head at Bourg St Bernard.

From here climb to the east behind the disused lift station following a stream bed to ~2800m.

A flatter bend leads off to the north towards the Col de Prox, which might require a short climb on foot.

From here a further traverse accesses either Mont Orge or the Croix de Tsousse (skinning or booting required).

Ski the bowl of Chaux de Jean Ma before crossing the moraine to join the summer approach to the Valsorey Hut from Bourg St Pierre. Above the Chalet d'Amont the summer track climbs up the hill side into steeper ground which is usually avoided in the winter.

Coming from the St Bernard Monastery join the route near Grand Plans soon reaching Point 2614.

The final approach to the hut is universally steep regardless of the line taken, and is a known avalanche blackspot.

A common line swings slightly north of the blunt ridge descending from the hut climbing steeply where kick turns will be required (beware of the steeper ground above).

It is also possible to continue on foot climbing the blunt rib directly, effectively following the summer approach to the hut.

The third option is to ascend the slopes to the south of the blunt rib- this may be less avalanche prone as the slopes immediately above are slightly less steep.
