Description

Marián Podola, creator of Zermatt Rösterei, has a saying: “The best coffee is the one you like.” I’ve decided I like mine best when it’s mid-trail run, freshly brewed on a mountain top, sipped with friends and a Matterhorn backdrop.

A very social run, beginning from the home of Zermatt Rösterei in Furi, this loop is perfect for a morning with friends.

Stuff your hydration vests with a kettle, grinder, aero press, small gas stove and some freshly roasted coffee beans from the highest roastery in the alps and set off in the direction of the Glacier Garden at the end of the Zermatt Valley.

Cross the bridge to the other side of the river where the trail gently climbs towards the Gorner glacier, once extending all the way into Furi.

As the glacier receded, it left a garden full of glacial potholes, created by melt water that flowed down to the bed of the glacier through crevasses.

The trail takes a left and ascends for a little over 500 vertical metres before reaching the treeline.

Sun shines here in the mornings and it’s the ideal spot to take a stop and brew some coffee, with a fantastic view of the lone mountain synonymous with Zermatt. After the view & brew pause, continue along the trail for a few hundred metres before descending down into forested singletrail – also a favourite with the mountain bikers.

Pop out at the road and finish the final kilometre past the lift station and back into Furi to the Aroleid restaurant for lunch.

Stock up on Zermatt’s own coffee from zermattkaffee.com Stay at the trail runners hub - Aroleid Lodge, directly above the roastery.
