Description

Beginning from Furi, set off before sunrise for an exhilarating view above Zermatt.

An out and back, this route has many options to add extra miles after reaching the hut, which is well worth it for the 360 degrees of mountain awe to take in. It is possible to take the less attractive ski slope track for the first few kilometres if your primary goal is to get up to the viewpoint as quickly as possible.

However, opt for the more scenic route wide when you drop back down in the sunlight as it’s far more spectacular (and fun)! After steep climbing for the first seven kilometres and gaining the majority of the vertical metres, the trail flattens out onto a rocky balcony.

Keep an eye out for the red and white tags and continue to Gandegghütte, but don’t be afraid to get off course for a while and immerse yourself in the breathtaking landscape.

The snow-capped peaks, glacial views and lifting fog as the sun rises, hitting the the Matterhorn is why we don’t sleep in.

Follow the same trail back, this time with a different perspective in daylight.

Descend to the small stream and climb up again to the east where you’ll eventually reach Schwarzsee.

Take the direct and steep route back down to Furi or continue towards the Matterhorn and add on the Ultimate Matterhorn Loop for a bigger day out.

Recovery Tip: From Furi, climb towards the ski slope for about 5 minutes to reach some rock pools full of clear blue glacial water to soak the legs in preparation for more glorious days of Zermatt trails.
