Description

This is one of the best trails in Yoho for reaching a mountain vista with a relatively quick hike.

It does not go all the way to the top of Paget Peak, but to the site of a historic fire lookout on the side of the mountain.

From there, you’ll see Wapta Lake and Sherbrooke Lake below, plus broader views into both the Bow and Kicking Horse river valleys, with mountains and glaciers bounding every horizon. You can start the hike either from Wapta Lodge or from the Sherbrook Creek Trailhead, which are near each other on the north side of the highway.

The trail begins as a mellow walk through lush conifer forest.

After the junction for Sherbrooke Lake, the way to Paget Peak heads more steeply upward, and soon takes to switchbacks.

It’s steep but well constructed. Views get better as you go up, as the trees thin out on the rocky slopes.

Over your shoulder, you’ll see the large Sherbrooke Lake, and ahead you’ll see more and more of the river valleys.

Once at the lookout, you’ll find flat ledges to sit on and take it all in.

Most hikers turn around here, but a path does continue higher on the slopes of Paget Peak.
