Description

On the slopes of the Volcán San José lay some of the most important roots of Chilean mountaineering and skiing history.

From the Refugio, you can enjoy the mellow slopes of the volcano, or serve as a base camp for a summit bid of Volcán San José.

There are many options for skiing, like heading up to las lajas for some mellow meadow skipping, or more commiting lines to the south of the little San Josecito.

Due to its colder climate, the flanks of the volcano hold better snow in the winter and spring months. There are no streams on the volcano during the winter and spring.

If staying at the hut, be prepared to melt snow.

For the descent, if the ascent route is patchy, head down the gully seen lookers' left while approaching the valley.

This is slightly steeper (34°), but is a way more interesting line down to La Engorda Valle.
