Description

An incredibly scenic and pleasantly straightforward ride, this is an ideal trip to do on the day you arrive in the Wildkogel; you'll only need a few of hours to do it and it's a great little warmup for bigger adventures in the area. Before setting out, please note that the ride has to be done the way shown - there are signs telling you it's one way on the southern shore of the Speicher Durlaßboden.

We've shown the ride starting at the carpark beneath the Sonnwendkopfbahn but obviously it's possible to ride in from Königsleiten or (if you don't mind a bit of extra uphill) Gerlos. Roll down to the Speicher Durlaßboden shore and then follow a fun, undulating track along the southern shore of the lake to the Gasthaus Seestübl.

The trail is non-technical and just about suitable for a trailer if you're pulling the kids behind you! The trail goes right to the shore of the lake at times and is wonderfully scenic and flow-y. Cross the dam - which is dramatic and atmospheric - and follow a similarly fun trail which gradually climbs away from the lake and then descends down to a tarmac road.

Follow this to the Finkau Hotel, which is perfectly situated above the second lake on this tour - the Wildgerlossee.

Carry on heading south and make the short - but quite steep - climb up the Trissalm, which serves great food and has an excellent view of both lakes.

Either of those factors should be enough to make a visit worthwhile! The trip to the Trissalm is optional, and not going saves a tough section of uphill, but it's worth a detour for the chance to look down on the lakes alone. When you've enjoyed some refreshment, descend back down to the Wildgerlossee.

Follow a track along its northern shore to reach a road, which is easily followed back to the carpark.
