Description

The Cascade Lakes are a collection of pristine alpine lakes scatted around the base of the volcanic peaks just to the west of Bend, Oregon.

These crystal clear waters attract visitors from across the country and are one of Bend's primary attractions. Elk Lake is one of the larger lakes along the Cascade Lakes Highway, and as such, it provides an attractive paddling destination.

The example paddle mapped here begins from a popular day use area on the east side of the lake.

Of course, you could shorten this route or lengthen it as you desire.

Whether you opt for a SUP board, canoe, or kayak is entirely up to you! Elk Lake does catch quite a bit of the prevailing wind out of the West, as the west side of the lake is largely unprotected.

For the most peaceful paddling, check the wind forecast, and try to get out early in the morning before the wind kicks up.
