FATMAP difficulty grade
After the big mountain day and long valley the day before, this feels like a much easier day.
This is mainly because you are nearly 1000m lower and it is either up or down with minimal flat terrain.
It is still, however, the best part of 2000m ascent and descent.
It is not as wild and remote as the Adula day but makes for a lovely day tour.
If you wanted, you could easily do this and return by bus to where you started.
Equally you could do this as a short day, using lift assistance.
If you are shunning the lifts then leave early to avoid the skiers coming past you - you will be skinning up the pistes.
There are no particular navigational difficulties and a number of possible lines, all of which take you to the frontier at the Splügenpas at 2114m.
It is an easy descent the far side, down to the Italian lake of Lago di Montespluga at 1900m, above the ski resort of Madesimo.
You will probably see tourers coming up from below.
It is worth being early as you have nearly 800m of ascent ahead of you, predominantly S facing.
Follow the obvious valley and other tourers to the N, then NW, followed by NE, to avoid steep ground, passing round the back of the well placed Suretta bivi hut.
You then take a descending traverse down to the Suretta Pass at 2579m.
It is slightly complex terrain the far side, but broadly you descend SE, over the Lago di Ghiachiato, then pick a line NE, down to the easy valley below.
Go E then NE to the hamlet of Alp Niemet.
From there it is an obvious track which goes to the main valley floor, just below Innerferrera.
It is well shaded so hopefully you will be able to do most of this on snow.
