An amazing peak that manages to feel wild despite its proximity to the ski area.

Description

From the Hoadlhaus restaurant (2304 metres), ski south on the Olympia Abfahrt Damen piste and follow it for 300 vertical metres to the Dohlennest bar.

Put skins on and climb south-east for 15 - 20 minutes to the Widdersbergsattel col (2262 metres).

Turn left and follow the beautiful, wide ridge for 7 - 8 minutes to the exposed summit of the Widdersberg (2327 metres).

Take skins off and ski south-east off the summit down some wonderful, flowy terrain that varies between 15 and 25 degrees.

After 200 vertical metres, begin to drift leftwards and hang onto your altitude because if you end up in the very bottom of the valley you've been skiing towards you will have to either skin or pole/sidestep out.

Keep swinging left and getting some turns in when you can until you are looking down into the mellow valley directly south of the Schneiderspitze.

Ski into this valley and enjoy bouncing down the easy terrain it is home to.

As the valley begins to steepen and the carpark at Axamer Lizum becomes visible, traverse left to the top of a 400 metre high tree-filled face.

Ski this face wherever you like, seeking out either tight trees or more open terrain depending on your taste.

This is a brilliant face and you are likely to find yourself whooping whilst skiing it! It brings you onto the bottom section of the Olympia Abfahrt Damen piste (which you started on at the beginning of the tour), and this brings you back easily to the foot of the Olympiabahn lift.

One nice option is to combine this ski tour with one of the freeride lines (Rinne 1 - 5 or Ost Wand) which lie on the opposite side of the Dohlennest bowl.
