Description

Great family or friends hike that takes you along one of the famous and historic balcony walks of Chamonix Valley.

The Grand Balcon Sud has been enjoyed since Victorian times when ladies and gentlemen would hike up Flegere and then along this high level trail which delivers amazing views of the mountains and glaciers across the valley.

Start from the cable car station at Les Praz and let the lift take the strain to whisk you up to La Flegere.

From here you take the trail heading to Plan Praz which is the mid station of the cable car which goes to Brevent.

Leaving the lift station turn right, and drop down below the lift cable and then pick up the signs which break off right.

The trail takes you through wild and rocky terrain but never feels too far away from civilisation.

There will be Alpenrose and juniper in abundance along the trail and often you can see Chamois feeding among the rocks.

There is a short section of steep steps heading down which are easy to negotiate.

You will often meet climbers with their ropes and helmets heading for the Via Ferrata which climbs the rocky ridge above the trail.

At some points it is quite rocky but the terrain is never difficult and there is not too much ascent to be done.

We have done this many times with families with children who are 8/9 years old and upwards.

They love it! Eventually you will climb a little as you head up towards the Plan Praz lifts, and then take some photos! The views are stunning! A short descent takes you to the gondola lift and a fast descent to Chamonix arriving in the town centre.

We recommend that you use the lift system for this hike and save your legs as the descent is brutal.

Have fun!
