Description

Maybe even better for running than it is for biking, Around the Mountain is a singletrack circuit of Bogus Basin ski resort, among cooler air and killer views high above Boise.

It's a welcome escape from the scorching foothills during the summer.

The trail is perhaps best known to mountain bikers, but the smooth, nontechnical track is wondrous for running as well.

There are just a few rockier sections, but nothing too rugged or loose. Around the Mountain trail does not form a complete loop on its own, but you must go counterclockwise starting with Deer Point trail.

This trail begins from Simplot Lodge and twists uphill right away.

It soon connects with Around the Mountain and curves around the shoulder of Deer Point, then you'll have alternating ups and downs, and plenty of flats, the rest of the way around the mountain.

There are patches of shady forest, swaths of open meadow, and brushy clearings of ski runs to keep the scenery interesting.

Then, of course, there are the views of Idaho mountains extending all around. Around the Mountain trail officially ends near Pioneer Lodge, still some distance above the start of the loop.

The MTB gravity park is in between, and most of its trails don't allow foot traffic.

Runners can take the easy way down on Yellow Brick Road to Bogus Creek trail to end up back at the start.
