Description

The Honeycomb Rocks Trail is a short interpretive path showcasing a series of unique rock formations seen in few places around the country.

Often referred to as *boxwork* formations, these rocks formed along a nearby ridgeline, though weathering and aging eventually allowed them to break off and roll down the mountainside.

Several informative signs line the trail, benches offer a relaxing place to sit, and the path is composed entirely of crushed gravel, making it one of the easier hikes in the area.

"Though uncommon, boxwork formations are found elsewhere," one sign notes.

West Virginia is also home to others, while Wind Cave NP in South Dakota is one of the most notable west coast locations where the phenomena occurs naturally.

It's even said that the former governor of West Virginia, Cecil Underwood, hiked through the area and was so captivated by these unique rocks, that he wanted to share his findings with others - which ultimately inspired the creation of the trail. The trailhead for Honeycomb Rocks is along Highland Scenic Highway, and easy to miss.

A small gravel parking area can only accommodate a few vehicles, though larger vehicles could park along the road and walk in.

There are no restrooms or water available, just a small kiosk that includes a brochure to accompany this self-guided walk.
