Description

La Vista Verde is a popular, easy hike to gain stunning views of the Rio Grande Gorge. In some ways, getting to the trailhead may be the biggest challenge.

There's no direct route into this part of the gorge, and the trailhead is located about halfway between the river bottom and the top of the rim on a washboard dirt road.

However, most two-wheel drive vehicles should be able to reach the trailhead. This short hike traverses along a bench above the river, going up and down some small, rocky hills.

One hill in particular descends steeply down loose, shifting stones.

While there are no major obstacles and the hill isn't long, a few of these steep pitches warrant the upgrade to a "Moderate" FATMAP difficulty rating. You'll know that you've almost reached the Vista when you see the Verde: a green oasis of grass and trees in a small depression.

This oasis in and of itself is incredible in comparison to the arid, desolate desert landscape that surrounds it. After following the trail through the green area, you'll pop out onto an outcropping and will be confronted with jaw-dropping views of the Rio Grande! Be sure to stop, sit on one of the benches, and take time soaking in the incredible view.

You've earned it!
