Description

For a family-friendly beach and hike day in pristine nature, look no further than Tai Long Wan Hike.

This hike is further away from the city centre than the other ones in this guidebook, but it’s well-worth the extra effort.

You’ll be surrounded by white sand beaches, turquoise sea, small waterfalls and estuaries, and arguably Hong Kong’s most spectacular mountain backdrop.

Even though this mostly flat trail is mainly paved, there are a few steps and dirt tracks at times, so it’s not the friendliest pushchair option.

Easily accessible by public transport options, start your hike with a stroll along the High Island Reservoir all the way to Sai Wan Beach.

The brilliant turquoise colour of the reservoir beautifully contrasts with the red clay earth and surrounding green trees.

Once at Sai Wan Beach, choose to spend the rest of the day here.

You can eat at one of the few nearby local restaurants and relax on the beach and in the water with your little ones, returning back the way you came.

Alternatively, after a break by the water, carry on walking along the coastal path to the next set of beaches.

If you continue, the path to Ham Tin Beach becomes a little hairier, but it’s still manageable with kids.

The third beach on this incredible hike is Tai Long Wan Beach, with the enchanting view of Sharp Peak in the background.

For your return journey, choose to hop on a speedboat to Sai Kung Pier from either, Ham Tim, Sai Wan or Tai Long Wan Beaches, or walk back the way you came for a loop hike.

Alternatively, rent a tent from the local restaurants and spend a night camping under the stars, roasting marshmallows around a bonfire and sharing stories with the kids, before returning the next day.
