This short trail offers breezy coastal views all the way down into the stunning Pololū Valley, with the chance of digging your toes in the black sand on the beach and going for a dip in the dark blue Pacific Ocean.

An often-missed hike, the Pololū Valley Beach Hike in the north of the island is a picturesque trail in a natural haven.

Only reachable by car, you’ll have to drive to the end of Highway 270 to reach the trailhead and the lookout.

As soon as you’re out of the car, you’ll be mesmerised by the expanse of ocean with its white crested waves crashing into the valley’s black sand beach and dramatic cliff sides.

Making your way down the valley offers even more striking views of the lush area and of the next valleys perfectly lined up behind Pololū.

It’s smooth sailing on a slightly rocky earth track all the way down, with idyllic picture spots along the way.

As you make your way down, you’ll be able to see further back into the valley.

Covered in trees and with small streams, the valley seems never-ending.

Once at the bottom, choose to hang out on the beach and go for a swim — be careful as the riptide is strong and Portuguese Man-o-war jellyfish are often bobbing in the water — before heading back up the steep earth path or lounge a little longer in the peaceful forest behind the beach.

If you’re up for a challenge, continue walking to the end of the valley and head up the steeper, longer, and less well-maintained Awini Trail.

It'll take you over to the next ridge to look over the beautiful Honokane Nui Valley.

You won’t be able to go down into the valley itself, as the trail was severely damaged during an earthquake a few years back, but the view from the top is absolutely breathtaking.

You’ll feel the strong wind blowing up from Honokane Nui Valley, and the undisturbed nature surrounding you is lush, peaceful, and simply stunning.

After you’ve had your share of natural beauty, head back the way you came, all the way down into Pololū and back up the other side where you parked your car.
